Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Providing compassionate care and guidance since 1992.

My name is Matthew Dawe. I received a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. I am a psychiatrist certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I have been practicing psychiatry for 32 years. Unlike most psychiatrists, I do both medication management and psychotherapy. I was trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute which is now known as the New Center for Psychoanalysis. I also do couples therapy. I care deeply about helping people with their emotional struggles and am committed to working diligently to find the most effective treatment for each patient.

I treat patients aged 18 and older for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, and relationship difficulties. I do psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which focuses on helping patients understand and resolve their problems by increasing awareness of their inner world and its influence over relationships both past and present.

If you’re interested in treatment, please call our office to set up an appointment for an evaluation. I’m happy to speak with you over the phone to explore whether the treatment I offer would be helpful for you. Appointments are available via telehealth and in-person.

Symptoms Treated

Mood Disorders

Mood disorders are characterized by difficulty regulating one’s mood. They can take the form of persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of motivation, numbness, and a loss of interest in the things one used to enjoy. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) includes these symptoms. Mood disorders can also be characterized by difficulty regulating the highs of one’s mood just as much as the lows. Mania, for example, is a mental state that includes characteristics like grandiosity, euphoria, racing thoughts, and risk-taking behaviors. Both mania and depression are present in Bipolar Disorder, which is characterized by the cycling that takes place between the two states.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are generally characterized by persistent feelings of worry, fear, or panic. These feelings can be conscious, taking the form of ruminative thought patterns, catastrophizing, and endless “what-ifs”. They can also be accompanied by physical symptoms like nausea, muscle tension, headaches, and heart palpitations. A common example of an anxiety disorder is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in which the everyday stresses of life and even its more mundane aspects cause uncontrollable, disproportionate fear and worry.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic, neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by three main symptoms: inattention (difficulty focusing), hyperactivity (excessive movement), and impulsivity (a tendency to act without prior thought/planning). Contrary to popular belief, ADHD can be present in both children and adults. Left unchecked, ADHD can lead to the development of other mental disorders like depression and anxiety due to its debilitating nature, which can cause feelings of frustration and defeat.

Psychosis refers to a mental state in which one’s mind has become disconnected with reality. It is usually characterized by the experience of hallucinations (sensations with no basis in reality) and/or delusions (thoughts with no basis in reality).
